The San Fernando Police Department (SFPD) has been awarded a $60,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support its ongoing traffic safety through focused enforcement, education, and officer training. The grant will support these efforts through September 2026. This fund will allow SFPD to expand programs aimed at reducing serious injuries and fatalities on local roads and improve safety for all road users, including drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

The grant will fund the following efforts:

  • DUI checkpoints and patrols targeting impaired driving.
  • Enforcement operations focused on protecting bicyclists and pedestrians.
  • High-visibility enforcement against distracted driving, including cell phone use.
  • Targeted enforcement of the most common crash-causing violations, such as speeding, failure to yield, red-light and stop sign violations, and unsafe turning or lane changes.
  • Community presentations on traffic safety topics, including impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding, and bicycle and pedestrian safety.
  • Specialized officer training and recertification, including Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE), and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) programs.
